Functional films aid learning at school
Papakura High School harnessed the power of functional films to optimise comfort and learning.
The one place that we really do need our children to be able to focus on their device screen is at school. But a light-flooded classroom makes this very difficult, as Papakura High School discovered. Curtains and blinds are cost prohibitive and often not practical in a classroom. They’re also difficult to clean and can promote asthma.
Beyond Surface applied a high-end Avery Dennison Solar Control film to panes in the classroom, reducing light and glare by over 80%. This allowed children in all areas of the classroom to clearly see the screen that the projector was focused on.

Brief
North-facing windows in classrooms were beaming in the light which was disruptive to students on screens.
Likewise the temperatures in the school’s glassy gym were hot on a sunny day.
Solution
- Window tint
- Fade and glare protection film
- Solar and UV protection film
- Light flare reduced by >80% in classrooms
- Average daily summer temperature reduction in the gymnasium of 12%
